Shower Pans – While various plumbing fixtures can leak, shower pans consistently raise suspicion for leak detectors due to their inherent design and the harsh environment they endure. Unlike a solid sink basin, a shower pan is a constructed element, often involving multiple materials and seals that are vulnerable to failure over time.   

One primary reason is the constant exposure to water. Shower pans are designed to contain water, but the repeated wetting and drying cycles, along with the force of water impact, can degrade sealants like caulk and grout. These are common weak points, allowing water to seep through cracks or gaps.   

Another factor is movement and stress. Depending on the subfloor and installation, shower pans can experience slight shifts or flexing when someone stands on them. This movement can further compromise seals and even lead to cracks in the pan material itself, especially in older or poorly supported installations.   

The drain assembly is another critical area of concern. The connection between the shower pan and the drainpipe involves seals and tightening mechanisms that can loosen or deteriorate, leading to leaks beneath the pan.   

Finally, improper installation is a significant contributor. If the shower pan isn’t correctly sloped, sealed, or supported during installation, it’s far more likely to develop leaks prematurely. Due to these multiple potential failure points and the constant presence of water, shower pans are a prime suspect for leak detectors employing various technologies, including moisture sensors, infrared imaging, and even acoustic methods that can sometimes detect trickling water beneath the pan.
